Design as well as installation. Particularly with lighting, Andy will
offer options to suit the room and the budget rather than putting a downlight in the middle
of every ceiling.
Tidy, and out of your way. The reviews say it more often than anything
else: minimal mess, cleared up at the end of each day, and no surprises on the invoice.

Partial rewire with the family still in the house
A big, complicated job including a partial rewire carried out while the household was still living there. The customer described the work as quick and competent, praised how little mess and disruption there was, and noted that Andy cleared up thoroughly at the end of each day.

Sockets, detector and ceiling lights
Faulty sockets and a heat detector replaced and ceiling lights repositioned. The customer's requirements changed several times along the way; the quote was revised each time and different solutions were offered rather than a single take-it-or-leave-it option.

All the electrics for a kitchen refit
A quick quote at a price the customer thought reasonable, the certificate provided, and the last few items finished off promptly after payment. Summed up as genuine and trustworthy, and someone they would use again.

The things people ask most often before booking an electrician. If yours is not
here, ring and ask.
Are you a qualified electrician?
Yes. Andy Mathieson has worked as an electrician for over 30 years and is an NICEIC registered domestic installer, Part P compliant and qualified to the current wiring regulations. AJ Mathieson Electrical is also a Which? Trusted Trader and a Checkatrade member, so the registration and the customer reviews can both be checked independently before you call.
Which areas around Corby do you cover?
Corby itself and the villages around it — Weldon, Great Oakley, Stanion, Gretton, Cottingham, Rockingham, Middleton, Brigstock and Geddington — along with Kettering, Rothwell, Desborough, Thrapston, Oundle and Uppingham. If you are just outside that, it is still worth ringing to ask.
Do you charge for a quotation?
No. Quotes are free and come with no obligation. Ring or send the form with a rough description of the work and Andy will come and look at it, talk through the options, and put a written price to you.
What does an EICR involve, and do I need one?
An Electrical Installation Condition Report is an inspection and test of the fixed wiring — the consumer unit, the earthing and bonding, and every circuit. Landlords in England must hold a satisfactory EICR for each rented property, renewed at least every five years, and give a copy to the tenant. Homeowners are not obliged to have one, but an inspection is worth doing before you buy or sell a house, or roughly every ten years.
My fuse box is old — does it need replacing?
A rewireable fuse box with ceramic fuses, or an early plastic-cased consumer unit, does not give the RCD protection required today. It is worth changing, but a board change should always start with testing the existing circuits: putting RCD protection onto cable that has never had it will immediately reveal any insulation faults hiding in the installation.
Do you do electrical repairs and fault finding?
Yes — tripping breakers, dead sockets, flickering or dimming lights, burning smells and scorched fittings. Faults are traced with test instruments by splitting and testing circuits, rather than swapping parts until the symptom disappears. Where the fault turns out to be in the incoming supply, the network operator is called out and the case put to them on your behalf.
Will I get a certificate for the work?
Yes. Every job is tested on completion and handed over with the appropriate certification — an Electrical Installation Certificate, a Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate or an EICR, whichever the work calls for. Notifiable work is registered under Part P.
Do you take on commercial work as well as houses?
Yes. Alongside domestic work Andy takes on small commercial installations — shops, offices, salons, workshops and units around Corby and Kettering. Larger industrial projects are outside what a one-man business can properly commit to, and he will say so rather than take the work on.
